“Navigation Spiritualized” by John Flavel
The Navigation Spiritualized or A New Compass for Seamen is a 19th century book written by John Flavel. The book belongs to a private owner in the U.K.
The book is a brown full leather binding which needed cleaning, consolidation of the leather, and board reinforcement to be handled safely.
The outside joints were consolidated with solvent-set tissue made with a thin machine-made Japanese paper, coloured with acrylic paints and coated with Lascaux 498HV.
In order to protect the book after its conservation, a clamshell box was made. This preventive conservation measure provides safe storage for the book and reduces the risks of future damage.
